How To Teach Siri To Pronounce Your Name?

Sure, Siri is smart. But when it comes to names that are not usually used, Siri failed, miserably. For me, i am an Asian. In no way could Siri call me right by my name. Even most people couldn’t pronounce it right the first few times. But fortunately, Siri is keen to learn. Apple made Siri humble….. Right, let’s move along.

In this post, i will teach you to teach Siri how to properly pronounce your name properly. The first thing you need to do is to go to ‘Contacts‘ on your iPhone 4S, go to your name in the contact list, click ‘Edit‘. Scroll all the way to the bottom where it says ‘Add Field‘. Select ‘Phonetic First Name‘ and/or ‘Phonetic Last Name‘, depending on which one Siri pronounces wrongly.

This is where it gets interesting. For example, if your name is Sean but pronounces it as Shawn, just type ‘Shawn‘ in. Another quick example, if your name is Aoibheann, but pronounced as eve-een, type in ‘eve-een‘. Simple as that!

Bonus tip: If your name is a little complicated to pronounce and just wanted to confirm with Siri whether it’s pronunciation is pronounced correctly, go to ‘Settings > General > Accessibility > Triple-click Home‘ and select ‘Toggle VoiceOver‘. Now, when you’ve edited the pronunciation, check it by triple clicking the HomeButton and tap that pronunciation field. Voila! Siri will speak it out!

Enjoy.

  1. How to tell Siri where to put the emphasis? Not all names are pronounced with an accented penultimate syllable. Upper case letters just make Siri say that letter. Thanks for the triple-click part, would never have found that! And if you say “Siri, speak my last name.” she doesn’t understand what you are asking. What could be simpler? Shrug.
